So, let's talk AI.... I'm sure you've heard of ChatGPT recently, maybe even tried using it?
It's just one of many AI tools, but it's rapid popularity can be attributed to a few factors:
It is developed on a massive data set,
It is able to respond in different styles, and even different languages,
It responds in natural-sounding language,
It is currently free to test out - you just need to sign up with an email and phone number.
In addition. positive user experiences and word-of-mouth recommendations have played a significant role in driving the popularity of Chat GPT.
The role of AI in copywriting
Marketing teams, copywriters, and content creators all over the world are salivating at the possibilities and uses of AI in their work.
And for good reason too - AI helps with content writing in many ways:
Idea Generation: AI-powered tools can assist in generating ideas and brainstorming topics.
Content Creation: AI can generate drafts, product descriptions, blog posts, and social media content based on input prompts.
Language Enhancement: AI tools can help improve the quality of written content because they offer features like grammar and spell-checking, suggesting alternative word choices, improving sentence structure, and ensuring overall coherence.
Time Efficiency and Automation: AI automates repetitive and time-consuming tasks, freeing up copywriters' time for more strategic and creative work.
Brand Voice and Consistency: AI tools can learn from existing brand content, style guides, and past successful campaigns, which helps maintain brand voice and consistency across various channels and platforms, ensuring that the generated content aligns with the brand's established tone, messaging, and values.
But, we should all go into AI use with some caution. Because while AI-powered copywriting has many benefits, it also poses some challenges.
How I work with AI in my freelance writing business
It's important to note that while AI can provide valuable assistance to copywriters, it doesn't replace human creativity, critical thinking, and strategic decision-making. Human copywriters bring a deep understanding of context, emotions, and creativity that AI cannot replicate.
The most effective approach often involves a collaboration between AI tools and human copywriters, leveraging the strengths of both to create compelling and engaging copy that resonates with the target audience.
I am currently updating my proposals and T&C's to confirm that while I might use ChatGPT for ideas and prompts, I still write all content for my clients myself, and only use ChatGPT for fun/ideas/heading suggestions/first drafts etc.
Risks of AI in copy or content creation
There is a risk that the copy generated by these tools may lack the emotional resonance and creative flair of copy created by human copywriters. Additionally, there are concerns around the ethical implications of using AI to create persuasive and targeted content.
Other limits or considerations of AI in copywriting include:
It seems to produce copy in American English so for us here in Australia or in the UK for example, there is still a need to check or edit the copy
The risk that any AI-generated copy is not factually correct
AI-generated copy can be boring if the right prompts are not used in the beginning
